i sent a pm to a friend on my list and for some reason 2 words i typed showed up as edited when i saw the mssg that was sent on the screen that refreshes after you send the mssg. i can understand it being censored on forums and pm's to people who aren't in friends but in pm's to friends,,,,, come on that is a little to much censoring. let me know who's idea or sugg that was so i can yell at them in a pm full of dashes ------------------ that is what a cuss word looks like i used 2 words that weren't offensive but they got censored in my pm. come on now |

SOmething similar happened on another site I was where "grape" got censored out to look like "g****". I can understand some words, but if a "bad" word is part of a full word wherein the entire meaning of the larger word is completely different than the "bad" series of letters, we need to change that. :) Granted, I haven't (yet) cussed on these fora, so I'm not sure what it looks like. |

Lanna, While I do understand your frustration there is a legitimate reason for the word censor, even on PMs sent to friends. The purpose is to block out the language some some people may find offensive. In this case, it may have been your friend. While they may not have found the language to be offensive, it is in place to protect people who do, not necessarily to censor you. You made a point that it was someone on your friends list, however, this isn't Facebook, and there isn't a confirmation process by the person you placed on your friends list, which could allow you to add someone to your Friend's list, and then flame them if the Word Censoring was removed (not saying you would do that). There is a setting in the User Control Panel that allows individual users to "Enable word censoring", which is set to "Yes" by default. Switching this setting to "No" at the current time doesn't seem to change anything, which makes me think there is either a bug, or the setting doesn't do what I think it should. I'm going to continue researching this setting and see if I can't figure out either what it really does, or why it doesn't work. HTH, David |

Ok...I found the setting that allows users to enable or disable the Word Censors... If you want to turn the Word Censors off so that you can see the curse words...and not the dashes, go to the User Control Panel, Board Preferences, Edit display options, and change the setting for "Enable word censoring:" from Yes to No. HTH, David |

I set it that way when you first started filtering the "naughty" words. I still see the dashes and resetting it does not help. |

Gern- I'm not sure what to tell you. I've tested it out and it seems to be working for me. The two posts that I have above indicate two different things. The first post indicated that the setting existed, but it didn't seem to be working, and that I would look into it. The second post indicated that I found the setting on the administrative controls that recognizes that setting. I had just got it working moments prior to posting my second post. Your post stating that it doesn't work was only 28 seconds after I posted that I had adjusted the settings. I'm not trying to say your not fast, but 28 seconds seems pretty quick to navigate into the UCP, flip the setting to YES, Save, Flip the setting to NO, save, find a post or pm that has words that were filtered as to verify if it worked, and then return to this thread and post that it didn't work. Are you sure it's not working? David |
