Where can I get my bodyfat measured in Lawrence?

Curves on Iowa (by where Food 4 Less used to be) does it as part of their membership evaluation - you might want to call and see if they will do it for free (if you're not interested in joining). Other than that, I'm not sure, but if you have a tape measure you can probably figure it out on your own, there are a lot of resources online that can explain how to do it.

Hope this helps!

I don't think Curves will do it for me. I don't have the right genitalia to be part of their exclusive club.

Now, THAT was funny! I have a copy of the "Curves' diet book iof anyones' interested..although I do find it hard to rationalise how reading a book helps to lose weight.perhpas you burn a calorie or two truning pages (or getting up to the fridge for a snack)

PS First of all, get a set of callipers and figure it out yourself...(your finders will work, but I guess you want numbers! If you have to ask, you obviously have to much, (don't the most of us? )

BTW I have some diet books I can sell you! After all it would burn some calories to come and get them!

Sometimes reading those self-help books CAN help you lose weight. I was reading this one about a whole town that started exercising together, can't remember the name of it but they had it at the library, it was pretty motivating, it gave a lot of tips on how to get your friends involved with your weight-loss goals, stuff on emotional support, etc. Then there's The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet which I started reading a while back...I can pass up chocolate and candy all day long and not bat an eyelash but stick a nice, fat sandwhich or something with tortillas in it or a waffle in front of my face and it's ON!

Other benefits to weight-loss reading material is you can read those kinds of magazines while you're on the treadmill and it kind of reinforces the good that you're doing.

I would also suggest books-on-tape for while you're walking? I wonder if they have those, does anyone know? I should get some if so!!!

I know that Perfect Balance weight mgt does body mass.... they weigh you and it prints out a cool thing that says how much water weight, muscle weight and such you have. And im pretty sure they do a First one Free. Ive had it done and Ive seen it either on TV or Newspaper that they do it free.... Good Luck To YA!

There are a lot of places in the area that will measure you, it really depends on how accurate of a measurement you want.

DXA is considered the new "gold standard" because it takes human error out of the equation but the laser cannot differeintiate between yellow fat and brown fat (more simply, good fat from bad fat). You can have this done at one of the labs on the KU campus, unfortunately it costs around $75 per measurement.

Hydrostatic or underwater weighing is another fairly reliable measurement. Basically you are weighed out of the water and then sumberged, blow out all your air, and your bodyfat is calculated based on the difference between those two weights. They can do this at KU as well in the Exercise Physiology Lab, I believe it costs $15 but don't quote me on that.

Calipers have a minimum 5-7% error range even in the hands of a trained individual so it's not the most accurate method, however it's a cheap test and almost every health club will do it for around $5.

The "Bod Pod" works on a similar principal to underwater weighing, however, last I heard no one in Lawrence had one yet. Don't even waste your time with bioeletrical impendence.

there is a center near 6th and wak you have to set an appointment. and go through a sales pitch. but don't go in and say i am just doing it for the test say you are looking at your options on programs to loose weight. they give you a slip that has everything on it BMI bodyfat yadda yadda it's like 6 inches long. um i will try to find where it was.
