No weeds and fewer other pests plus excellent use of space.

We're up for this concept as an experiment and a way to spend less time with chiggers.

I have seen a few of the tomatoe planters, but wonder how these would work with squash since they are so heavy.

I have done this in the past and if you want to try this you will still need to stake the plants, just that you will be staking them downward instead of up. The problem that I have is as the plant grows it naturally will turn upwards toward the sun, and as the fruit comes on it is to heavy and it will break the trunk of the plant. I do this now with plastic buckets and just drill about a 2" hole in the bottom place plant through the bottom and add dirt. Hang it by the handle from anything that will hold the weight. I just push a dowel rod through the hole and stake the plant to it as it grows. As the plant matures and the fruit appears it will should have enough weight to keep it pointed down. Just remember that a 2 gal. bucket full of dirt plus a tomato plant full of fruit is heavy so don't hang it from the gutters of your house. I hope this is helpful to anyone wanting to try this. Good growing.
