So what is the best way to do it? I am not a good enough gardener to be able to identify which bulb is which once the flowers are gone so I'd like to get them moved now while I can still identify what kind of plant I have. The ones I want to move are all of the early bloomers such as daffodils, grape hyacinth & tulips. What is the best way to do this without damaging or killing the bulb? |

If your flower bed is dry pre water the area like I mentioned on a follow up post on the tree thread. You do not want to be digging in mud but soft damp soil is good. Get the area ready that you are going to move them to. The types you mentioned are hardy and can last much longer out of the soil than one might think. The quicker you get them in the ground the better chance the greenrey will hang on a little while to help nourish the bulb. Do not worry if the stalks and leaves dry up. Use a hand held garden trowel and dig down and around the flower far enough away from the stalk so you do not destroy the bulb and lift it out of the ground using the hand trowel from underneath the bulb. Do not pull on the stalk. After you get the flowers out you may want to dig around the area especially where the Daffys were. You may find bulbs in the ground that you did not know were there. Good luck and have fun getting dirty. |

When I want to part out plants I mark them with old pieces of a mini blind. Use scissors to cut the Identifiers and permanent marker or pencil(will stay in rain) and push in close to the plant. Reusable,cheap,and looks nice. |

Awesome idea & since I now have 2 sets of miniblinds that are broken, I think I'll be set for garden markers for a while!

No kidding!!! I am still on my first set of mini blinds 6 years now. grin :) Sometimes when I am bored watching TV I'll cut some more while the snow is blowing outside. |
