Im probably a few weeks behind for starting my millet seed.I plant them in a loose soil mix and cover them with vermiculite.I usually loose some but Im one of those that over plant. I'm also starting my elephant ears.I just put them in some moist loam in a cardboard box. I'll plant them out in May. May 10th my Mom always said was a safe date to dodge the last frost. |

Good to know. I am going to try my hand at purple milet this year. I think the variety I have is Purple Majesty. Where do you plant your millet at? I was going to use my for height in planters. I get a kick out of the birds eating the seed. |

I have a bed of yellow w/brown throat daylillies. I plant the millet in the back and daisy zinnias or marrigolds in the front. This lines our driveway, every year I try and do something different.Last year I planted cannas in the back, they didn't grow but 2 1/2'- 3' tall.So this year its back to the millet. |

Sounds beautiful. My cannas didn't get very tall either. I think it was too dry and they require alot of water. Speaking of which, have you ever tried to overwinter your cannas? This is the third year I have tried overwintering my cannas. Each year I get different results. Last year was disasterous. This year they are sprouting in the basement and about a foot tall. |

Yes, I winter them over I guess you could call it.I wrap each tuber in newspaper and put in an old cooler or box.I put them away in a cool place like the basement. This spring I unwrap and plant. They always survive, thats not the problem,I'm sure it's like you said "Not enough water". |

Have you started you purple millet seed yet? I was looking at my seed packet yesterday and wondering if it was too early. It was a gorgeous day on Monday. I cleaned up my perennial beds yesterday. I am one of those that like to leave the perennials standing all winter so the birds can eat the seeds. |

YES!Absolutely. Mine has been started now for approx. 2-3 weeks. It is 3" tall now. It seemed to grow really fast this time and the seed is some I saved from 3 yrs ago. It usually starts off slow so don't get impatient with it. Buzz back later and I'll let you know how it is doing. |

My purple millet seedlings are up and growing rapidly. All this great rain is really helping. |
