Philip Glass (one of my favorite composers) will be at the Lied Center on April 7th at 7:30.

His work is very methodical so he’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I’m a big fan.

My admiration of his work began while watching Kundun. His musical compositions for the soundtrack blew me away, especially the last minute of the film. He recreated the visual imagery with music in such a masterful way. If you skip to 7 min. and 40 sec into the video below you may see what I mean. You have the expansive sky, representing hopes and dreams, portrayed by the flutes pitching, bouncing and floating then the dark thuds of the drums pulling you back down to earth, the mountains, and hard cold reality. From that moment I was a fan of Philip Glass.

Kundun Ending.- Skip forward to 7:40

Heres the full piece without vocal interruption.

Kundun Soundtrack: Escape to India

And more of his work. I love this piece entitled Einstein on the Beach. It's like he puts you in the mind of Einstein for a moment.

Einstein on the Beach

Violin Concerto, 1st movement

Glassworks, Opening

Tirol Concerto

I would love to go see him, but have a conflict that evening. Our daughter's college choir recently performed Three Songs for Choir acapella. Lovely.

Truman Sleeps is hauntingly beautiful.

I agree. Many of his pieces affect me that way.
