Post subject:  Slugs- how do I get rid of them

Anyone know what to do about keeping giant slugs off my dog's food and water bowls that are kept outside in the backyard on the wooden deck? They are so gross and are eating my puppies food. I even found one in the dog food bag.

Thanks

Rolled up wet newspaper, or a bowl of beer are both things that attract them.
Here are some other tips...the sand or copper tape both seem like good ideas.

Thank you so much for the tips and links. I would hate to waste the beer, so I think I'll try salt. :yippee:

I tried sand and it did not work. The slugs were still in the dog food. I will try beer tonight.

I say, drink the beer! Surround your dog's dishes with a nice ring of salt! (Ew, but hey, as kids we all did that!) There are some really nasty slugs this year, sometimes I see very few, but this summer has been particularly bad for slugs. I was outside on the deck last week, dark out, barefooted, stood up to go inside and the childhood feeling of snot between your toes was there! I haven't stepped on a slug barefoot for a very long time, but, it's just one of those gross things you never forget! Good luck! (Could your dog bowls possibly be brought in, as on a porch or something?) Just watch your step - literally!

Bummer! The salt will definitely work, but my thought was that the dog might lick it up? I would bet that Sunrise garden center carrys the copper stuff though, or maybe Earl May. As far as the beer goes, I know that attracts them, but the question remains, do they prefer the dog food? Good luck.

I guess I've been lucky, I really haven't had a problem with them. I did see a few this spring when it was really wet, but as of late I haven't seen any.

Today while cleaning out some very old things at my Grandmother's, I ran across a magazine, unfortunately there is no date on it! It was way before it's time since now we can get Mother Earth News... This is called "Grandma's Best Kept Secrets". It had an article on "critter remedies" that seemed a bit more humane than the salt (although by now I know I would have used the salt! (This remedy mentions "snails, but since they are basically slugs in a shell I thought it might help!)

CRITTER CONTROL
Snails......................................Cabbage Leaves
Mosquitoes.............................Lemon Balm
Cutworms...............................Pine Needles
Aphids....................................Rhubarb
Gophers..................................Daffodils
Japanese Beetles.....................Garlic
Rabbits...................................Onions

There are remedies for shining your shoes with banana peels, to using making cloudy glass sparkle with potato peels, but I suppose that will come in handy on another thread sometime! This is a cool magazine, I am glad I found it! Good luck with the slugs!
