Post subject:  de-skunking recipes?

Three of my dogs got skunked last night, so I am looking for some good advice on removing skunk odor. I know there are some great ideas out there in Larryville. Help!

Here is a Skunk Tonic recipe from Missouri Conservationist July 2008 magazine. Hope it helps!

Skunk Tonic
For use on people, clothing and pets.

Mix Together:
1 quart of hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid laundry soap or dishwashing detergent

The first two ingredients form an alkaline peroxide that chemically changes the skunk essence into sulfonic acid, an odorless chemical. The soap breaks down the oily skunk essence and makes it more susceptible to the other chemicals.

Chemicals in this formula are harmless, but try this solution at your own risk. To be safe, keep the formula away from the eyes, nose and mouth of people and pets.

Do not store this mixture or put it in a closed container. When kept in a warm place, the mixture may expand and burst the container.

This recipe and other tips can be found in Missouri's Skunks at http://www.MissouriConservation.org/257.

If you can't get the smell out at home, and are willing to spend a bit of cash, Bradley Animal Hospital on 23rd Street successfully de-skunked our big dog with their magic bath. Their number is 785-843-9533.

Thanks! I'll keep them in mind. I tried the peroxide/baking soda recipe and it worked wonders. The only problem is that you have to keep it away from the eyes. The seem to get the brunt of the spray on their face, so there's still some residual odor from around the eyes.

tomato juice works great, nothing dangerous to any eyes or any thing either.
