Why do voters keep returning "friends of developers" to government?

Too many voters observe how much money candidates can raise. Some think low funding indicates low interest in the job = wrong again. Big dollar spenders in most cases are the
wrong choices. Very few candidates will ever be able to keep up with the Chamber /development industry candidates supported with development special interest financing.

Voters should consider low funded candidates as the right choices. They have been as qualified as any so called "business owner". Business owners are not good stewards of our tax dollars.

Lets's support the low spending candidates with taxpayers low special interest funding because low spending taxpayers are the largest group of stakeholders. Where is our representation?

Stakeholders want Management

Taxpayers are the largest group of stakeholders in Lawrence and Douglas County. Stakeholders have the least amount of respect and input as to how are tax dollars are spent.

This needs to change.

We need the authority to approve:

--- Tax dollar abatements,rebates etc etc

--- All projects that will require our tax dollar support

--- How we want the 1994 sales tax money spent to prevent further abuse

--- How personal property values are established to prevent further back door tax increases

--- All new retail and apartment construction to prevent further reckless management of our local economy

--- the enforcement of site plans

In general whats been missing the past 20 years is Fiscal Responsible Management of Lawrence economics. Electing “business people” to the city commission does not necessarily indicate they have the means or experience to manage Urban Economics.

Always voting yes to corporate welfare is more like Laissez Faire Government. Some would call it Fascism.

Owning and running a small business is not quite like managing tax dollar budgets and certainly nothing like managing local growth. This is why taxpayers need the authority to approve spending and tax dollar abatement issues.

Our local economy needs economic growth NOT economic displacement backed by over extended markets. Lawrence needs a shot of growth management to protect our tax dollars.

Big business people whether local or from out of town neither fear nor respect elected officials. This could apply to city hall in general. Which them trickles down to the largest group of stakeholders ..... we the taxpayers.

Preferential Tax Exemptions

In general if the recipients of the Preferential Tax Exemptions cannot manage any of their for profit ventures at a profit without Preferential Tax Exemptions doesn't that place OUR TAX DOLLARS at risk across the board?

Why should taxpayers assume such risk or any risk at all?

City Hall will resist fixing sidewalks, building bike paths that connect to all sides of town or resist building pedestrian/cyclist overpasses at dangerous intersections or in general dedicate any of OUR TAX DOLLARS to the walkable community effort that will benefit a huge number taxpayers throughout the city.

But will hand out zillions in Preferential Tax Exemptions to just a few .... then come back and tell the other taxpayers there is no money for other taxpayers.

WHEN WILL taxpayers be afforded the opportunity to either approve or disapprove these Preferential Tax Exemptions going to developers?

It does not appear the majority of taxpayers have a voice on the current city commission.



Reckless expansion and nonsense Preferential Tax Exemptions increases taxes and drain our wallets.

A quite interesting presentation by one Michael Duffy of KC Redevelopment which discusses in great detail avenues to control "tax incentives" such as placing caps and where to place the money. Duffy did not come off as fan of developer control.
