Say NO to the Far-Right American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)

SIGN THE PETITION: Tell Legislators to Say NO to the Far-Right American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)

State Legislators:

In addition to a host of pro-corporate, anti-consumer and anti-environment laws, dangerous "shoot first" bills, discriminatory voter ID legislation and draconian immigration policies are just some of the laws that have been aggressively promoted by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

If you work with ALEC in any way -- attend its conferences, pursue its legislative goals or use its "resources" -- I urge you to cut ties with the group without delay. If you have not worked with or on behalf of ALEC, please avoid any future association with the group.

I, with thousands of likeminded Americans, will work to hold lawmakers associated with ALEC accountable.

Signed,

--- Brownback helps surrogates and lobbyists for corporations to draft and promote state bills which:

* wages war on women
• gut environmental laws
• create a regressive tax system
• eliminate workers’ rights = lower wages
• undermine universal and affordable health care
• privatize public education
• chip away at voting rights.

--- What Does ALEC Lobby For?

ALEC claims it “does not lobby in any state.”20 However, ALEC’s tactics and operations are strikingly similar to those of registered lobbyists with corporate benefactors. Beyond distributing model legislation, ALEC provides its members with “issue alerts,” “talking points,” and “press release templates” expressing support or opposition to state legislation. The organization tracks the status of its model bills in legislatures, and sends its employees to testify in support of its bills in state houses across the country.21
Undercutting Health Care Reform

After the passage of health care reform, ALEC’s top priority has been to challenge the law by encouraging members to introduce bills that would prohibit the law’s insurance mandate. ALEC’s Health and Human Services task force is led by representatives of PhRMA and Johnson & Johnson, and representatives of Bayer and GlaxoSmithKlein sit on ALEC’s board. The group’s model bill, the “Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act,” has been introduced in forty-four states, and ALEC even released a “State Legislators Guide to Repealing ObamaCare” discussing a variety of model legislation including bills to partially privatize Medicaid and SCHIP. The legislative guide utilizes ideas and information from pro-corporate groups like the Heritage Foundation, the Goldwater Institute, the James Madison Institute, the Cato Institute, the National Center for Policy Analysis and the National Federation of Independent Busi

Nearly 50 years ago, with Martin Luther King Jr. standing beside him, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law to protect African-Americans and other minorities from racist policies that made it harder for them to register to vote and participate in the political process.

But last summer, the right-wing ideologues on the United States Supreme Court handed down a shameful decision that gutted the Voting Rights Act, ending 40 years of protection for minorities against discriminatory and unfair attempts to limit voting based on one's race.1

Fortunately, Representatives John Conyers, John Lewis and others have now introduced legislation that would restore and modernize the Voting Rights Act for the 21st century.

We need to stop Republicans in states around the country from enacting racist voter ID and voter suppression laws. Passing the Voting Rights Amendment Act now is the best way to do it.

Tell Congress: Restore the Voting Rights Act now.

Speaking of nightmares... All my life I have had terrible dreams like a Quentin Tarantino movie. Or maybe Pasolini's Salo. In nightmares I have died in as various a number of ways as Kenny on South Park. Here is a sample: Shot in thigh by president Nixon, drowned in car going over bridge, nuclear explosions4*, alien invasions*, volcanic eruptions*, floods*, earthquakes*, tornados*, flood/tornado combos, knifed by strangers, decapitated, burned in fire*, disemboweled, hung, electrocuted, squashed by Big Foot, shot by thugs*, airplane crash*, fall into glacial crevasse, fall into mud pit, avalanches*, strangulation by Muppets/evil clowns, fall under cracked ice, attacked by ax, scythe, lawn mower, pencil, rake, etc. (* show multiple repeating variations on a theme).
