Ive been reading up on ready boost in windows 7 and it seems like it works much better than it did in Vista. Ive just upgraded my machine to this:

MSI K9A2 Platinum AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX
AMD Phenom 9950 Agena 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition
4 Gigs Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066
ATI 3870 X2 x2 ٩(๏̯͡๏)۶
OCZ 600w ModStream Pro
Western Digital 250gb SATA II HDD w 8mb cache

So yea. Its pretty fast already, except for the hard drive. Proggies take a little while to start (longer than you'd expect with the specs) and Im sure its the HDD.

From what I understand you can set up a cache on a flash drive to improve preformance. With my system specs, would it make much of a difference or would I see a boost in disc preformance like Im hoping for (and does it actually friggin work)?

Ah, the discovery that the quad core really isn't much faster than a hopped up duel core syndrome. Probably wastes to much time with sectional management to conserve energy and cut down on heat. You are probably stuck with that part unless you want to try to overclock assuming you can get past the fail safes and don't mind running with a block of ice on your processor. I really do dislike it when part of the tech out paces other parts.

Anyway, back to your original question. A flash drive should work with the following caveats. All flash drives are not created equal. Yup believe it or not. Flash drives don't have a Declaration of Independence to go by. Not all flash drives are Ready Boost compatible. If you find a fast, compatible drive it will help but I doubt you will see the surge in speed you might be expecting for the money spent. I mean come on Gazza. You already have a machine that will perform all you mistakes and errors with blind faith and lightning speed. I wished the Hybrid flashes were further along in tech to see if they would make any real speed difference.

Pitouhy: Sorry I had to spit before I desecrated my mouth with Western Digital. I have never had a lot of luck with them. If you really want to spend more money because you want the speed you might try a Velociraptor HD when the price drops a bit. It could be that would be a wiser choice of money spent than messing with a flash drive.

I see massive gain in preformance over my 939 X2 4400+ (well duh, right?). I have it overclocked to 3.0 with the stock cooler and a windtunnel in my box Im idling @31C and under load about 50. Ive heard these Phenoms can clock to around 3.4. Had to loosen my memory timings for it to pass orthos but the thing screams. I think I was silly wrong about the HD cache being the culprit, it was my timings. The OCZs I just bought dont seem to run as well as the Corsairs I had but Ill be getting some Ballistixs soon. Do you abuse your pc too?

Yes I do. No wait. You were referring to computers. I use to mess around with the machines a bit. I managed to fry a processor or two and or smoke a few mother boards finding out that the max clock speed was really less than the estimated max. I decided it was to expensive to gain a few micro seconds in speed. Especially when I realized that no matter how I hopped it up, I was always going to be limited by the front bus speed. Things have changed some since then but I have found other things to spend my money on.
