I am looking for anyone that can help me with a laptop problem (That won't cost me an arm and a leg, since I don't have that kind of finances). It is an older HP laptop that is running Windows XP. I am running it to the internet through a wireless connection but cant seem to make it work. It says it is connected with a strong signal but I still can't get on the internet. It is a HP Pavilion ze 5300. Is there a setting that I don't have turned on on my laptop? I hope someone can help.

I posted this in another thread, and it's a direct cut/paste, I don't feel like editing it, so some of these won't be relevant for you at this time:

1. can you see your wireless network from your new Vista machine?
2. verify security settings: do you know your WEP or WPA password (if any)
3. verify that your Linksys router has its name changed from default (linksys), it's possible you're picking up a neighbor's, who might have changed their security settings, but who's signal is stronger than yours
4. the wireless card switch, as mentioned above: make sure it's on
5. sometimes wireless devices do not cooperate with others. Try changing security settings, maybe change from WEP to WPA (or vice versa), or disable wireless encryption, and see if you can connect at least that way, could help narrow it down.
5. sometimes the wireless card's own program (if it has one) is the problem, try disabling that and using the Windows wireless settings instead (or vice versa)
6. maybe your linksys router needs to be power-cycled, I've seen that
7. try to connect to it from within the same room (line of sight) to make sure it's just not a signal issue or getting interference from metal objects... for instance, you might be in the next room but be exactly behind your refridgerator, which could greatly reduce the ability for them to communicate well with each other.
8. Sunspots: I realize there aren't any on our sun now (or the cycle is just starting), but this is possible for down the road.
9. other interference: many other things cause radio interference, and can be impossible to diagnose, the best network is one that's plugged in. :)

Tell us more about your wireless connection. Is it yours, or are you "borrowing" somebody elses wireless. No judgements from me, I promise, just helps troubleshoot.

Do you know what sort of security it is using? WEP. WPA, WPA2, MAC filtering?

Can you connect to wireless at other locations with this laptop? Try to get connected a coffee shop or Panera, somewhere with public wifi.

If you can get on somewhere else, make sure you have all the Windows updates, specifically Service Pack 2 as it included support for WPA2 security.

Also, make sure you wireless card has the newest drivers, which you should get from the manufacturer.

If you are using IE:

Open Internet Explorer
Click on the CONNECTIONS tab
Click on LAN settings
Make sure there is no check mark in the box next to:

I have seen malware check this box.

Good luck.
